CVHS Going to the Birdies (for Charity)!

Our Historical Society has been presented with a wonderful and exciting opportunity from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation for raising funds. This is the organization that recently awarded us a grant of $15,000, and is host of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Golf Tournament.

At the end of the each year, we have reminded our members that the Society is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, and that your donations to us are fully tax deductible. This year we will also be participating in the charitable distributions from the Pro-Am tournament in the “Birdies for Charity” program. The Society could realize a substantial increase in every donation. Here is how it will work:

Instead of making out your donation check payable to us, the check would be made out to the Monterey Peninsula Foundation with the stipulation in the lower left corner of your check “For the Carmel Valley Historical Society.” This designates where our share of the distribution should go.
You must send your check to the Historical Society along with the Official Pledge Form to: P. O. Box 1612, Carmel Valley, 93924-1612. We will take it to the Foundation.
The Foundation will send you an acknowledgement of your check. The CVHS will also acknowledge your donation.
After the Tournament is played and the funds totaled in March, the Society will receive the amount of your check, plus an additional 15%! Thus the Society could receive $115.00 for every $100.00 donation you make! Any donation of $20.00 or more can be a part of this program and we are hoping that many of you will be able to participate to help our Building Fund grow even faster!

Participation in this endeavor is open to everyone so we encourage you to talk to your friends and neighbors, especially those who golf, and ask them to join us in this fund-raiser. Just be sure to follow the instructions on the Official Form to credit the Historical Society.

We have received our first generous donation from the Ernie and Annie Marshall Family. They were most happy to hear how their money would grow into a larger sum to the Society’s advantage. This will happen to all our donations, so we ask you to consider making a contribution to this project.

If you want your donation to apply to this year’s taxes, it must be received at the Foundation by December 31, 2010. However, donations for our share can be made right up to the start of the Tournament in February. Donations can also be made online by credit card and we urge you to go to their Website, attpbgolf.com for all the details. There is also information there about the chances for you to win personal prizes as well as support the Historical Society. If you have questions, please call Art or June Taylor at 659-2038. The Society is very excited about being included in this worthy tournament and having the opportunity to complete our History Center much sooner.

At that event we'll be awarded a plaque and a proclamation from the Board of Supervisors. Please join us. Return of the Gigantic Rummage Sale

The big, big Gigantic Rummage Sale takes place on August 28-29, at Hidden Valley Seminars, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. We have been collecting sale items for several months and Maxine Callinan, Anne Jones and Trudy Hart have been working hard sorting and pricing them. There will be some very interesting and unusual items for sale and we encourage you to plan to come out and see them. For example, there are some absolutely stunning china dishes that have come from the estate in Carmel that Sidney Slade and Frank Quilty have set aside for us. One complete set of china includes settings for 12, plus serving dishes. The china is white with a gold rim and a narrower gold band within the piece. We have several rare, one-of-a-kind, hand-painted, antique and vintage plates, cups and saucers, service plates and bowls. Some of these lovely dishes will be on display at the Center during the Fiesta. You can set up an appointment after August 15th to see them more closely.

Some of our more interesting donations include framed artwork, computer desks, unusual cabinets, a table saw, distinctive glassware and some lovely linens to grace your table. The History Center will be open every Saturday morning in August from 10:00 AM to noon and all day Saturday and Sunday during the Fiesta. If you have items to donate, bring them to the Center on any Saturday after the Fiesta, or call Maxine to arrange for pickup.

All of our sale items will need to be moved to Hidden Valley on Friday, August 27th. We need YOUR help in moving everything, especially if you have a pickup truck. Almost all the donations have been packed in boxes, so the transporting should go smoothly. If we have three or four pickup trucks working, we could set up very quickly. Do you know of some teenage young men who could lend a hand lifting boxes and loading the trucks? We would be very happy to acknowledge the help on their community hours’ list.

We also need helpers at Hidden Valley on Friday to set up the tables and unload and sort the boxes. Many hands mean light work. Do call and offer your assistance – we want our members involved in our events, and this Sale is a lot of fun. Activity Around History Center

At long-last the funding has come through to allow the Recreation and Park Board to move forward on paving the parking lot adjacent to the Center. This is a major step that will mutually benefit folks visiting both the park and our History Center. Well done!

Carmel Valley's First History Book Due on Shelves 4 January 2010

We've just learned from Arcadia Press that Elizabeth Barratt's book Carmel Valley, in the Images of America series will be released and on the shelves in book stores January 4th, 2010. As a reminder, the proceeds of this book will go to the Historical Society's fund raising effort. keep you eyes open for book signing events already scheduled. These will make great gifts for family and friends and will benefit your Historical Society.

The Carmel Valley Historical Society hosted a booth at the Ranch Roundup event held at the Trail and Saddle Club on September 26 and 27. Joining us was Amanda Gates (shown here with her friend Michael and Board Member and past president Ellsworth Gregory) who is collecting horse shoes as part of her girl scout project. The horse shoes will eventually be displayed on the floor of our History Building along with the inscribed floor tiles that people have been donating. In the two days we handed out tile donation forms and sold T-shirts, wine glasses and vintage photographs. Anne and Rod Mills gave us generous support with help and the display of saddles and other ranch-related equipment.

It's come to our attention that some Society members believe the regular monthly Board meetings are not open to the general membership. This is far from the the case. We welcome members with ideas, suggestions, comments (and even complaints) to join us at the Board meetings. They're held the first Wednesday of every month from 4:00 to 5:00 PM, in the parish hall of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.
We do ask, however, that if you wish to speak at one of these meetings, please first contact our President pro tempore Richard Barratt at 659-2751 (you can leave a message), about a week ahead, so you can be put on the agenda with scheduled time to talk. Please know that all the Board members want to keep the lines of communication open with our members, so if you have something to bring to their attention, please don’t hesitate to come forward.

There's no such thing as a "dull day" in the wonderful world of the Historical Society. Here's a current list of events the Society will be participating in so mark your calendars and plan to join us in the fun and fund raising.

11 July, 11:00AM-4:00PM - Heartstrings and Hair Faire. This is the brainchild of our dear friend and supporter Marj Ingram, and sponsored by your Society. Radical haircuts will produce a bounty of lovely locks for children who've lost their hair to serious illness and disease. In addition there will be numerous other opportunities to participate and contribute, such as Reggie Jones' now-famous Tile Project. Please join us and support a number of great causes.
1-2 August - We'll be active in Carmel Valley's Fiesta. Again, please join us for this event.
29-30 August - The Society's Gigantic Rummage Sale, to be held this year at the Hidden Valley Music Center.
First weekend in September - We'll be going international by participating in and supporting the annual Greek Festival to be held in downtown Monterey. Again, a fund raising event as we reach out to the larger Monterey County community.
26-27 September - We'll again be prominent in our participation at Ranchers Days to be held at the Trail and Saddle Club at the end of East Garzas Road.

As a follow-on to the Book Project, Elizabeth Barratt has just been informed by her editor at Arcadia Press that her manuscript was absolutely without flaw, required no editing or adjustments, and hence it's being sent on for production immediately and without more ado! Brava and well done.

Elizabeth Barratt, Society founding member and current Board member, delivered her manuscript for the first comprehensive book on the history of Carmel Valley to her publishers at Arcadia Press on Monday, 29 June 2009. Elizabeth was well ahead of the deadlines established at the time she signed her contract with Arcadia. This work is being done in conjunction with the Carmel Valley Historical Society. Proceeds from sales will go to the History Center's building fund, not only to aid in completing the building, but also for the on-going operational expenses of the Center. The anticipated release date of the book is December of this year. Book signing venues are already being planned, with the first set for Lugano Swiss Bistro in Carmel Valley's Barnyard Shopping Center. Exact date for this and other promotional events will be announced in the near future. Our congratulations and sincere thanks to Elizabeth for this generous effort on the Society's behalf.

Here they are, the latest of Reggie Jones' shots of the History Center. In spite of our efforts to let folks in the Valley know they are about to have an honest-to-God place for their Historical Society's collection and a place for folks to visit, study and research, we still have a lot of people who come by and admire the building, and then ask, "What's this?" As you can see Reggie has taken the necessary steps to answer that question up front. Also shown are some of the first shipment of the tiles in our ongoing fund-raising Tile Project. Please remember, we still need to complete the building for "doors-open" status, and at this point the Society's financial coffers are bare. Tell your friends - and we thank all of you who've supported this fine effort thus far.

Carmel Valley History Center a Reality!

In January 2008 Carmel Valley Historical Society members told their Board they wanted the facility built, and they wanted it to be called the History Center, not a "museum." We listened to you, we formed a "building committee" spearheaded by Reggie Jones, and now, as of 14 June 2009, we have the facility. This photo is your completed Carmel Valley History Center. The exterior is finished, and our funds are exhausted. We continue to press forward with fund-raising projects in order to complete the interior, and have the facility's "Doors Open" and be operationally ready as soon as absolutely possible. To this end we continue to ask every one's support in the fund-raising effort. Thank you all for your great work so far.

June Plumlee Honored

At the regular monthly meeting of the Directors on 1 June 2009, the Board honored June Plumlee for her outstanding and untiring efforts on behalf of the Carmel Valley Historical Society. Although not a member of the Society per se (at least not on the first of June) June has worked diligently at our fund raising Tile Project, bring in significant and much needed funding to our rapidly dwindling coffers. In recognition of her great work, June was made an Honorary Life Member of the Society. In addition we had the pleasure of honoring and celebrating her 90th birthday! The cake provided by Society Secretary June Taylor was a treat for all in attendance. Our heartiest congratulations and wishes for many happy returns of the day to our newest member, June Plumlee!

On May 30th your History Center moved closer to reality. The day before Reggie Jones (Building Chairman extraordinaire, photographer (to whom we owe thanks for these from yesterday), and general all-around handy-guy) spent the better part of the day doing protective taping and papering of the walks, windows, doors, etc. in preparation for painting. The first picture was taken at 7:15AM, the second, showing "work completed," at around 2:15 PM. Our thanks to the ongoing support and brilliant craftsmanship of Tim Shearer of Regency Construction, the fantastic crew of TNT Painting who donated their time and equipment, and the members to the Society who came out in support and odd-job endeavours. We're getting close! Don't forget however, the financial effort will be on going. Our thanks to all of you who are assisting in this as well. Please "tell your friends!"

Historic Preservation Project Continues

The ongoing effort to save Carmel Valley's historic site at the Boronda Road/Carmel Valley Road inter-sections continues. A new banner has been added to the site area, and Joe Hertlein has marked Public Works' "condemned trees" with orange survey tape. Everyone is encouraged to check http://savetheborondatrees.weblog.com for the latest. Draft letters, fliers, petitions and more can be downloaded from that site. Historic preservation is a part of our Society's mission. The draft EIR fails to site many other alternatives for "safety" at the intersection beyond the destruction of one of our most visible historic asset. Volume is the watch word for the expression of public indignation at this latest attempt. Thank you all for your support and efforts.

History Center Tile Project

The Carmel Valley Historical Society invites you to join our Tile Campaign to help build the CV History Center. Purchase a tile which will be installed on the building's floor. The tile may be engraved with your name, the name of someone special to you or the name of your company. Your tax-deductible contribution will help ensure that the history of Carmel Valley, from native Indians to the present time, will be exhibited and preserved for you, for your children and for future generations. The building, located on the East side of Community Park in Carmel Valley Village, will exhibit hundreds of artifacts, photos and memorabilia that have been collected by members of the Historical Society over the past 22 years. It will be an attraction for residents and visitors, provide an educational resource for all, and be a source of pride for our community. The tiles are engraved using state-of-the-art laser technology. Their strength and durability will create a lasting impression! For years to come you'll be able to bring your children, grandchildren and friends to see your personalized tile.

As you can see, the initial phase is rapidly drawing to completion, as are our funds on hand. We need everyone to continue to help with fund raising projects and programs. Progress on The History Center Continues

The History Center continues to rise at the East side of Community Park in Carmel Valley Village. Here's the latest (26 March 09) from Building Chairman Reggie Jones' keen camera eye. As we pointed out in last month's annual general membership meeting, the fund raising for this project is an ongoing effort. We're spending at a great rate and are looking for support among members and the general Carmel Valley population. We've had great support thus far and are most appreciative. At thus stage we'll be able to finish the "shell" with no problem. We're looking for the funding to complete the building so we can finally open the doors to the public.

BORONDA TREES AGAIN UNDER ATTACK!

ALERT ~ Public Works is at it again!! Action Required!

For the God-knows-how-manyth-time, Monterey County Public works is again addressing destruction of Carmel Valley's first site to be placed on both the state and federal Registers of Historic Places. This while the state and county struggle with huge and growing deficits. On March 18th they published their draft EIR for public review. A copy of this document is available at the Carmel Valley Public Library. Note that in their usual cavalier fashion, Public Works posted a copy of their notice by stapling it to one of the historic trees! Talk about adding insult to injury.

Briefly, the County's plan is to remove 30% of the trees that are on the Register, effectively destroying the site. They're proposing the expenditure of, at last count, some $815,000.00 in a time of financial crisis and regardless of the adamant objections of the area residents and general public since this was first proposed in 1985. We're asking all our supporters to get behind the campaign to squelch this ridiculous plan. For starters, telephone calls, e-mails, and regular letters are needed. Addressees are:

Giant Garage Sale 2009 - Update

Update Advance Notice - this ever-popular event, scheduled this year for August 29th & 30th, is now being organized! As a break from tradition, this year it will be held at the Hidden Valley Music Seminars site at 88 Carmel Valley Road.

It's not too early. Every one's encouraged to start collecting their donatable goodies for the sale. No clothing will be accepted this year, however accessories are OK. It's requested that all donations be clean and in workable condition, if applicable. Details as to time and place for pick-up and/or delivery will be announced later on this site, the Society's newsletter, and any other means available - stay tuned.

WE'RE UNDERWAY!

Yes folks! The Carmel Valley History Center is now underway! Yesterday, January 5th, equipment moved on site. Today, January 6th, golden shovel in hand, and under the watchful eye of our Building Chairman Reggie Jones and Tim Sherer of Regency Construction, our Past President Ellsworth Gregory officially "broke ground" for the center. Cheering him on were long-time supporters Randy Randazzo and Marj Ingram Viales, along with those members of your board of directors who were here at the time. The dream that's been over 21 years in the making is about to become a reality. All are welcome to come down and "rubber neck" at the site as hings come together. Thanks to all our members and friends for you loyalty and support.

From the President: The Time Has Come - We Need Help!

Now that we're underway it's time to seek member help. For the bulk of 2008 your board of directors, and especially Reggie Jones, has been engaged in those "dirty little details" necessary to get the building project finally up and running. Although not visible at this time, the site has been staked and the permits have been verified and signed off by the county. Dirt will start moving in early January 2009. The board has established time lines (to be published on this site shortly) and we're ready to move forward.

While we're still seeking nominees for membership on the board, our immediate and serious needs are for our members to join us in several very important areas. Needless to say, the first of these is the Finance Committee. We have a solid base, as we've been reporting, however the time has come to get very serious in the fund-raising sphere. To date, this has been handled by our very capable Treasurer, Art Taylor with a little help from your president. While we are ad hoc members by virtue of our officer's positions, we are not the committee, nor can we be. Please help.

Another area is our Public Relations Committee. Our Secretary June Taylor has done a fantastic job, however, here again her position in this area is ad hoc, not a committee per se. Because of the tremedous amount of work that will be going on, not just with the building, but also with the planning for the opening scheduled for 2009, we need a dedicated program of public relations. Again, please help.

On Thursday, 13 November, Reggie Jones, our Building Committee Chairman, Marj Ingram, and I met with Regency Construction and gave them the word to launch. Our Proposed Museum

The Society has been granted land adjacent to the Community Park to erect a museum. It will store our extensive artifact collection, plus a research library and displays of the history of Carmel Valley. Many early residents and their descendants have been audiotaped to record stories of how life in the Valley evolved. These tapes, plus historic photographs, antique farm equipment and tools will be available for the public to view and researchers and scholars to study when the museum is constructed.
